      Hi

I wanted some feedback on how other SEO's structure their time. I feel as though I'm falling into the trap of fire fighting with tasks rather than working on substantial projects... I don't feel as though I'm being as effective as I could be.

Here's our set up - Ecommerce site selling thousands of products - more of a generalist with 5 focus areas.

      2 x product/merchandising teams - bring in new products, write content/merchandise products

Web team - me (SEO), Webmaster, Ecommcerce manager

      Studio - Print/Email marketing/creative/photography.

A lot of my time is split between working for the product teams doing KWD research, briefing them on keywords to use, checking meta.

SEO Tasks - Site audits/craws, reporting

Blogs - I try and do a bit as I need it so much for SEO, so I've put a content/social plan together but getting a lot of things actioned is hard... I'm trying to coordinate this across teams

Inbetween all that, I don't have much time to work on things I know are crucial like a backlink/outreach plan, blog/user guide/content building etc.

How do you plan your time as an SEO? Big projects?

Soon I'm going to pull back from the product optimisation & try focussing on category pages, but for an Ecommerce site they are extremely difficulty to promote.

Just asking for opinions and advice 🙂

I also want to know about the SEO structure in terms of content especially when you are working for an E-commerce site. I'm working for an Arabic gum product and I want to increase its organic search.

We have lots of content on our retail sites.

Some is content that helps visitors use/select/maintain/repair/enjoy the products that we sell.   These pages link to where the product can be purchased, where to purchase parts, where to purchase accessories, etc.   These pages bring in more traffic than our sales pages and people who arrive at the site through these pages account for a significant number of conversions.

Some is content that is related to the niche that we sell but unrelated to the products that we sell.  These pages also bring in more traffic than our sales pages and account for a significant amount of conversions.

On all pages of our site, articles, sales, category, home, etc.... we run adsense, but block the ads of our direct competitors.  These ads bring in nice money.  Do we lose a few potential buyers through these ads?  Yes, but we don't have to do any work for the income.

            Hi

so the linkable refers to things people link back to? What if those linkable pieces of content aren't directly profitable?

So you produce a great piece of content, but it doesn't initially drive conversions right away?

Get a big white board on the wall of your office.  Along the left side draw a vertical line and label it "PROFITABLE"...   along the bottom draw a horizontal line and label it "LINKABLE".  These are the Axes of Success.

Now plot your projects on this graph at positions along these axes.  Then organize your work to do as many jobs in the upper right quadrant as possible.

HI Becky, so our priorities matrix involves both our business needs with our company values. As such we score each Project (not task) out of 5 for the following :-

                • Profitability
                • Positive culture
                • Customer experience
                • Distribution and growth

The total score then dictates the order of priority for our business. We are service lead to our scoring may differ from yours, but hopefully this gives you an idea of what we do. Our projects list is also used at board level to show what we are working.

Thanks for your feedback, I have used Asana and I keep lists but I probably need to get better at consolidating the lists & organising them into sections like you said.

Things here can often be disorganised and something will drop in which is completely unplanned for.

How did you put together the projects/priorities matrix? We've started organising our teams tasks into whether they directly impact our KPI's & if not the tasks drop to the bottom.

We're just being pulled on by 2 different teams, their priorities and then ours & your feel like your priorities just slip way down.

I'll see what courses they have online that sounds helpful 🙂

I know how you feel, in the beginning this was a real problem for me, especially being in the industry we are in, as this makes it so much more difficult. The pace of change is staggering and there is often very little lead time for a huge change that can impact your whole task list.

I find a flexible approach works best for me, I personally, use Asana to order my Task Dashboard into manageable and categorised sections, projects, recurring tasks and where possible tasks that are in progress or have been handed off/waiting on others.

I also have a second projects and priorities matrix which grades my projects (not smaller tasks) based on business needs and the largest potential wins, this helps me to focus my time on what really matters.

Sometimes external influences do cause your projects to creep or slip, just make sure all parties involved are kept up to date to manage delivery expectations. After all Google does like to throw an algorithm spanner in the works every now and then.

It also would not harm doing a course or two in time management. 🙂 Hope that helps a touch. Feel free to reach out if you want to know more.

I would recommend listing out everything you're doing on a daily/weekly/monthly basis (whichever encapsulates what you do)...you already have a great start to this. Then, for 2018, decide the things that you need to either stop doing to delegate to other people (don't worry about who that would be just yet). List out the things that you need to get to but aren't, as well.

So, that leaves you with three lists, essentially: the things you shouldn't be doing (and can pass off to someone else), the things that you should be doing but aren't, and the things that you have been doing (and will continue to do).

Present that to your boss with your recommendation for how to get the other items done (pass them off to a colleague, hire an intern, hire a part-time person). Also, include some ROI of what will most likely happen if you start focusing on those new, key areas.

And then message me and tell me how it goes.

From the sounds of it, you need to put some production management techniques in place. We all face that...

Facets Being Indexed - What's the Impact?

Hi Our facets are from what I can see crawled by search engines, I think they use javascript - see here http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/lockers I want to get this fixed for SEO with an ajax solution - I'm not sure how big this job is for developers, but they will want to know the positive impact this could have & whether it's worth doing. Does anyone have any opinions on this? I haven't encountered this before so any help is welcome 🙂

404's and Ecommerce - Products no longer for sale

Hi We regularly have products which are no longer sold and discontinued. As we have such a large site, webmaster tools regularly picks up new 404's. These 404 pages aren't linked to from anywhere on the site any longer, however WMT will still report them as errors. Does this affect site authority? Thank you

Title Tag Verses H1 Tag. Is having both the same better than different if there's only one clear winner in keyword search volume

Hi Mozzers, I am going through my categories on my eccomerce hire site trying to improve things and just wanted to check this query with you My understanding is that if I have the same H1 and title tag, then that would give more weight for that keyword phrase? Would I also be correct in assuming that the H1 is more important than the title tag or should both be treated as equals in terms of SEO. My dimemla is that for certain products we hire, there's only really one clear winner in terms of keyword phrase. The others I find in keyword planner are way down the volume list , so I have tended to put the H1 and title tag as the same and then have H2 tag and a slightly different heading. Is that the best philosphy or should I really mix them up , so the the title tag, h1, h2 are different ? Also Currently My on page content mentions the the H1 tag near the beginning of the content. Is this correct or should I really be using the H2 tag phrase near the beginning of the content. For example - One of the products we hire out is carpet cleaners. Therefore the main keyword phrase is carpet cleaner hire
and for our local pages its' carpet cleaner hire <city name="">.
This is my title tag and H1 tag and then for my h2 tag , I have something like "carpet cleaning equipment" with the content
mentioning carpet cleaner hire near the beginning.</city> I don't want to look likes its over optimization or mention the word hire to much but being a hire website, it's difficult not to and other keywords that don't mention it in it, are to varied so could increase bounce rates ?. When I look in GWT against my content keywords - the word hire shows a full bar. Just wondered what peoples thoughts are if what I am doing it okay?
                        thanks
                        Pete

Any reasons why social media properties are ranking higher than the site's own name?

The site below has social media properties and other sites coming up before it's own listing even for the exact search of the site name. Any ideas why this is happening? Link Any input is appreciated.

Also what about filters that available in category pages? Say if i were to filter  by color. what would be the best URL? I am sure canonical tag is needed here. A Noob's SEO Plan of attack... can you critique it for me?

I've been digging my teeth into SEO for a solid 1.5 weeks or so now and I've learned a tremendous amount.  However, I realize I have only scratched the surface still. One of the hardest things I've struggled with is the sheer amount of information and feeling overwhelmed.  I finally think I've found a decent path.  Please critique and offer input, it would be much appreciated. Step One:  Site Architecture I run an online proofreading & editing service.  That being said, there are lots of different segment we would eventually like to rank for other than the catch-all phrases like 'proofreading service'.  For example, 'essay editing', 'resume editing', 'book editing', or even 'law school personal statement editing'. I feel that my first step is to understand how my site is built to handle this plan now, and into the future.  Right now we simply have the homepage and one segment: kibin.com/essay-editing.  Eventually, we will have a services page that serves almost like a site-map, showing all of our different services and linking to them. Step Two:  Page Anatomy I know it is important to have a well defined anatomy to these services pages.  For example, we've done a decent job with 'above the fold' content, but now understand the importance of putting the same type of care in below the fold. The plan here is to have a section for recent blog posts that pertain to that subject in a section titled "Essay Editing and Essay Writing Tips & Advice", or something to that effect.  Also including some social sharing options, other resources, and an 'about us' section to assist with keyword optimization is in the plan. Step Three:  Page Optimization Once we're done with Step Two, I feel that we'll finally be ready to truly optimize each of our pages.  We've down some of this already, but probably less than 50%.  You can see evidence of this on our essay editing page and proofreading rates page.  So, the goal here is to find the most relevant keywords for each page and optimize for those to the point we have A grades on our on-page optimization reports. Step Four:  Content/Passive Link Building The bones for our content strategy is in place.  We have sharing links on blog posts already in place and a slight social media presence already.  I admit, the blog needs some tightening up, and we can do a lot more on our social channels.  However, I feel we need to start by creating content that our audience is interested in and interacting with them on a consistent basis. I do not feel like I should be chasing link building strategies or guest blog posts at this time.  PLEASE correct me if I'm off base here, but only after reading step five: Step Five:  Active Link Building My bias is to get some solid months of creating content and building a good social media presence where people are obviously interacting with our posts and sharing our content. My reasoning is that it will make it much easier for me to reach out to bloggers for guest posts as we'll be much more reputable after spending time doing step 4.   Is this poor thinking?  Should I try to get some guest blog posts in during step 4 instead? Step Six:  Test, Measure, Refine I'll admit, I have yet to really dive into learning about the different ways to measure our SEO efforts.  Besides being set up with our first campaign as an SEOPro Member and having 100 or so keywords and phrases we're tracking... I'm really not sure what else to do at this point.  However, I feel we'll be able to measure the popularity of each blog post by number of comments, shares, new links, etc. once I reach step 6. Is there something vital I'm missing or have forgotten here?  I'm sorry for the long winded post, but I'm trying to get my thoughts straight before we start cranking on this plan. Thank you so much!
