      Hello Everyone,

      We have been looking into our placements recently and see that one of our blog posts shows on page #5 for a popular keyword phrase with a lot of search volume.

      Lets say the keyword is "couples fitness ideas"

      We show on page 5 for a post

      /couples-fitness-ideas-19-tips-and-expert-advice/

      We want to try and get on the first page for that phrase and wanted to know if it is better if we did one of the following:

      1. Create a new page with over 100 ideas with a few more thousands of words. with a new url (thinking /couples-fitness-ideas)

      2. Create a new page with a new url (thinking /couples-fitness-ideas) with the same content as the currently ranking post. We would want to do this for more freedom with layout and design of the page rather than our current blog post template.

      Add more content, let's say 100 more ideas.

      Then forward the old URL to the new one with a 301 redirect.

      3. Add more content to the existing post without changing the layout and change the URL.

        I just wanted to thank everyone again for their insight as well as send an update on the status of our page.

        We are now ranking #2 for our target keywords as well as other top10 rankings for similar keywords.

        Appreciate all your insight and feedback.

          Looks good plan. Except content promotion. You need to do them both (updating and promotion) at same time.

            I have a question regarding adding content to the page.

            Currently we have the 19 ideas. Would it do more harm than good to add 5 ideas then publish it.

            Then add 10 then publish, add 20 then publish. And so on. Basically updating the post every week or daily with more ideas. Rather than update it one time with 100 new ideas.

            Would it be more beneficial or harmful to update the post more frequently than one major update.

            Then once we have a significant number we would promote across social and outreach for links.

                  I love how Peter actually brings this point as I recently faced this problem with one of my client. Here is what I would have done if I would be at your place.

                  If the content you are trying to rank is not good enough, after all the effort all you will get is more traffic with higher bounce rate which I am sure you do not want at the end of the day. One thing you need to make sure that the content you are planning to create is more powerful or the one that you already have is good enough for your target audience.

                  If you are fine with the content you currently have, stick with that and move as Peter suggest but if you think that the content you are planning is more powerful, I would suggest creating a new page and redirect the current page to the new URL. This way you will skip self-cannibalization plus the audience will get new and more powerful content than the one you were previously targeting.

                  Now you have the new content ready with old one redirecting to the new URL, it’s time for you to properly optimize your page, get some links and get it rank on your targeted key phrase.

                    Awesome.

                    So add some new ideas to the current post that ranks while we work on the new and improved page. This will move it up a little bit to make the switch even more effective.

                    Your other insight is great as well. I love Brian Dean's stuff too. Super Helpful.

                    I'll keep you updated on our progress.

                    Hopefully it can be a learning experience for all.

                      True.

                      First make backup and then proceed with #2 or #3. Also you can improve little bit #3 with few "extra" tips and just to see movements in SERP. Because you know - there is vacantions ahead and probably beginning of 2016 you can see move.

                      Of course implement good and old tricks - social signals, little bit fresh links from authoritative and trusted sources. Also you can put there videos - one video can put your average visit duration up and do engagement. Example is Moz  - their regular articles are text-text-text-image-text-text-image and so on. But their WBF articles are text-video (length approx. 10 mins)-text-text-text.

                      #2 is same way as Brian Dean (Backlinko) - Skyscraper Technique.

                        Thanks for your feedback. I would assume if did a whole new page/post for the same keyword we would be competing with ourselves and do more harm than good.

                        We are going to move forward with number 2 and see how it goes.

                          First you need to read this one:

                          and more articles about "keyword cannibalism" or "content cannibalism" or something.
                          Because for you it's much more important to not harm current position as primary goal and secondary goal is to get some improvements.

                          So it's safe to try N:3 on same or other page just for test. But N:2 is probably correct way. You just to watch for implementing same on-page SEO optimization for new layout if there is new one.

                            Unique Pages with Thin Content vs. One Page with Lots of Content

                            Is there anyone who can give me a definitive answer on which of the following situations is preferable from an SEO standpoint for the services section of a website? 1. Many unique and targeted service pages with the primary keyword in the URL, Title tag and H1 - but with the tradeoff of having thin content on the page (i.e. 100 words of content or less). 2.  One large service page listing all services in the content. Primary keyword for URL, title tag and H1 would be something like "(company name) services" and each service would be in the H2 title. In this case, there is lots of content on the page. Yes, the ideal situation would be to beef up content for each unique pages, but we have found that this isn't always an option based on the amount of time a client has dedicated to a project.

                            Is a particular page not ranking for any reason?

                            I posted about the Google WEbmaster tools Structured Data set up in this thread here: http://moz.com/community/q/using-google-structured-data-for-seo-benefit Just a follow up question (or separate)... would having a lot of products with marked up data (via webmaster tools and not on page) hurt SEO rankings? I have not got any warning/notice etc in Google Webmaster tools about it. Search term 'buy isagenix' on Google Australia Product listing page not in top 50

                            Ranking Fluctuations

                            I need your help. My rankings have been on a wild roller coaster ride since I started optimizing the site with standard on page optimization changes. (No keyword stuffing or over-optimization...) I have only made positive changes for the content on the page; I created unique descriptions for every product. I redirected some urls that weren’t readable into a more user- friendly format. I am only doing completely organic link building, really. Yet for some weird reason the rankings initially rose and then steeply fell and ever since have went back up to the top and right back to not in the top 50 results. Just to give you an example this is a graph of one of our main keywords: https://www.diigo.com/item/image/3vpdp/gd2q This is another keyword that we admittedly never were in the top 5 results but usually we were in the top 20. Check out the wild fluctuations. If it wasn't the main keyword we were going after, I would probably laugh. https://www.diigo.com/item/image/3vpdp/rcy9 I asked an expert he said he think it might be from a major issue with internal competition. The keywords that seem to fluctuate the most, have numerous landing pages that compete for the same keyword. Since we sell the same object in many many different sizes, thicknesses and colors it only makes sense that we have the same keyword on many pages. I would love someone that is an expert in this area to have a look at the site and give actionable advice so I can stop the craziness. Do you have any suggestions? Do you have anyone that you’d refer for this type of job/consulting?

                            Which page to rank for a Keyword? Home Page or Deep Page?

                            So, we have a situation where there is one particular keyword we want to rank for. We have been up and down over the years, at our best probably position 4-5, and now at 20ish. Thats for our home page of course, which the majority of our linking is probably pointing at. We also have a sub page which is optimised for that particular service. The term is "web design brisbane".
                            So as you can imagine, Web Design is in itself a service and we offer others. Should we optimise our home page for it and remove the sub page?
                            Keep the sub page because its one our services and optimise both?
                            Do some kind of canonical thing?
                            Change our interlinking? All our competitors home pages seem to be the ones that rank, and it feels and looks better in results if its the home page, but if switching up to our sub page is better im all ears. Also if our sub page is somehow hurting or leaking SEO from the home page, id like to know as well. Would prefer to not have to provide a link, due to competition but if someone wants to know we can always PM.

                            Old landing page modifications - should I change the content?

                            Missing meta descriptions on indexed pages, portfolio, tags, author and archive pages. I am using SEO all in one, any advice?

                            I am having a few problems that I can't seem to work out.....I am fairly new to this and can't seem to work out the following: Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂 1. I am missing alot of meta description tags. I have installed "All in One SEO" but there seems to be no options to add meta descriptions in portfolio posts. I have also written meta descriptions for 'tags' and whilst I can see them in WP they don't seem to be activated. 2. The blog has pages indexed by WP- called Part 2 (/page/2), Part 3 (/page/3) etc. How do I solve this issue of meta descriptions and indexed pages? 3. There is also a page for myself, the author, that has multiple indexes for all the blog posts I have written, and I can't edit these archives to add meta descriptions. This also applies to the month archives for the blog. 4. Also, SEOmoz tells me that I have too many links on my blog page (also indexed) and their consequent tags.
