Sometimes I write a post for another site and then post the first 1/3rd on my site to help promote it. Is this a bad idea? When I do that should I be adding a canonical link to the original post? Should I have /make sure the 3rd party site does something? Is there anything else I should do?

      Thanks in advance.

Leaving it as is is fine, although you can also properly rel=canonical it to the full post on the other domain if you or the publishing site want you to.  I would probably do that.

Technically, it is considered duplicate content but google doesn't actually penalize for "duplicate" content per se. In cases such as yours, google just doesn't assign any ranking strength to the duplicate version--that is not the same as a penalty. So, if it is indexed first on the other site and/or that other site is a stronger site, or there is no  intent to make money through monetizing copied content, google will just assign the value for that content to that other site.

https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2013/04/5-common-mistakes-with-relcanonical.html :  We recommend the following best practices for using rel=canonical:

One test is to imagine you don’t understand the language of the content—if you placed the duplicate side-by-side with the canonical, does a very large percentage of the words of the duplicate page appear on the canonical page? If you need to speak the language to understand that the pages are similar; for example, if they’re only topically similar but not extremely close in exact words, the canonical designation might be disregarded by search engines.

        • A large portion of the duplicate page’s content should be present on the canonical version.

https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66359?hl=en Duplicate content on a site is not grounds for action on that site unless it appears that the intent of the duplicate content is to be deceptive and manipulate search engine results. If your site suffers from duplicate content issues, and you don't follow the advice listed above, we do a good job of choosing a version of the content to show in our search results.

“Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar. Mostly, this is not deceptive in origin…..” Google Webmaster Guidelines

Is it feasible to try to compete with an established site with a fresh domain any time soon?

Currently I'm looking at a competitor who owns a site with the following metrics: Domain Authority - 39 /100
          Page Authority - 49 /100
          Spam Score: 1 /17
          93 Root Domains
          2,199 Total Links
          Page Social Metrics
Facebook - 431 Shares, 17 Likes I'm thinking it would take 12 months+ to become a viable competitor, but thats a complete guess. What are peoples thoughts on undertaking something like this?

Niche sites migration into one authority site

I have multiple websites within the health niche. All 3 sites are about different topics: protein powder, superfoods, and sustainable products. I am thinking about migrating those 3 sites into 1 big site, to establish more authority and for branding purposes. But since those domains are exact match domains, and those exact keywords are pretty high volume, I'm not sure if it's a good idea. Will this be a good idea from a traffic/conversion/seo standpoint? Or should I make a header on top where people can 'switch' between those 3 sites? Or just leave them seperate?

How to Host Microsites: Mission Critical or Six of One / Half Dozen of the Other?

Hello, fellow Mozzers!  Been racking my brain. Thanks for your help on this one! I am in the process of putting together several microsites for our marketing agency.  The sites feature similar theme and design elements, but are focused on delivering a customized industry-specific visitor experience with unique navigation, brand messaging, services, case studies, etc. I am struggling with whether I should host as entirely separate websites, as subdomains of the parent site, or as separate WP installs in subfolders of the main domain. I have been leaning toward the sub-folder option to share domain authority and keep our SEO efforts consolidated.  But I am also concerned that the microsite "home pages" will underperform as sub-folder pages, versus being an actual home page of a unique domain or sub-domain. Is this a six-of-one or half-dozen of the other situation, or are there some important considerations I'm missing here? Thank you for your help here!

          Expert site feedback required please

Hi all, I would really appreciate some feedback on a site i have developed for a client. To give you a little background, we sell cheese and other associated products online. The site has been online for about a year or so but SEO only really implemented in the last few months. The site visitors are low at the moment which is leading to low sales of course 🙂 I would love some feedback on the areas listed below. My goal is to improve visitor numbers, visibility of the site and sales. Not much then... 😉 • Site design
          • Usability
          • On-page SEO
          • Off-page SEO
          • Any other feedback / advice you would be kind enough to offer The site address is: http://www.internationalcheese.co.uk Thanks in advance, i look forward to reading your responses! 🙂 Chris.

UGC Brainstorming - Need Some Help!

Hi All, I'm helping a client build an e-commerce store from the ground up, which sells class rings to high school students.  Not a novel product, but they have a nice URL - WearMyStory.com, and are thinking through creative ways to reach the market by letting users share their stories with UGC. I have some ideas, but could use some help.  I think using video/picture/essay contests for students to share their stories is a great way to get buzz and grow socially.  What I don't know is how to capture all of this great UGC for SEO purposes.  Do you know of any great sites with brilliant UGC strategies (outside of reviews, etc.)?  Do you have any examples of software companies who help you leverage the UGC into SEO gold?  I'm trying to find great examples of frameworks where sites are leveraging the UGC. The other wall I am hitting is how to create a community when it is simply a one time purchase e-commerce product.  If a customer buys a ring (or any product for that matter), what would keep them coming back to the site?  Any good examples out there that you can think of? Thanks!

How does link juice work? My site structure is wrong? [HELP PLEASE]

Hi guys, I sell cartridges for printers and i'm struggerling to rank a lot of printers. I've been told it's all about domain authority and it'll pass down to these pages, however I can't see it happening, nor can I wait for it to happen. Should I rethink my categorys? I've got subcategorys in subcategorys in subcategorys - probably not advised because of link juice right? e.g Epson Stylus SX130 Ink would be located below. Epson > Epson Stylus Series>Epson Stylus SX Series>Epson Stylus SX130 Ink
