I've decided to use sub folders for my site, and from everything I've read online it seems I shouldn't change the page content depending on IP, yet I know of a successful well funded site that hires full time SEO staff that does just that, and I'm wondering whether they know something I don’t which is helping their SEO.

From everything I've read online this is the format I think I should use:

      mysite.com/us/red-wigs

      mysite.com/gb/red-wigs

      mysite.com/red-wigs does not exist

This is the format the other site is using:

      othersite.com/red-wigs (from US IP address)

      othersite.com/red-wigs (from UK IP address)

      othersite.com/gb/red-wigs

The content on othersite.com/red-wigs is identical to othersite.com/gb/red-wigs when loading from a UK IP address, and a lot of URLs without /gb/ are being returned when searching google.

The benefit I can think of that they are gaining is US pages which are being returned for UK based searches will return the correct content. Are their any other gains to this approach? I'm concerned that if I use this approach for different languages then the radically differing content of othersite.com/red-wigs depending on the location of the crawler might confuse google - also generally changing content depending on IP seems to be recommended against.

      Thanks

Canonical and hreflangs are always full url and you can't use relative addresses:
        https://developers.google.com/search/docs/advanced/crawling/localized-versions?hl=en
"Alternate URLs must be fully-qualified, including the transport method (http/https), so: https://example.com/foo, not //example.com/foo or /foo"
        https://developers.google.com/search/docs/advanced/crawling/consolidate-duplicate-urls

So you need to remake your example with full URLs like:
        protocol://domain (with or withour WWW.)/path/to/some/folder/

Also avoid geotargeting for IP.  This can went you on deep issues since Googlebot is crawling mostly from US IP. Therefore Google NEVER can see your UK links. Source:
        https://developers.google.com/search/docs/advanced/crawling/locale-adaptive-pages?hl=en
"If your site has locale-adaptive pages (that is, your site returns different content based on the perceived country or preferred language of the visitor), Google might not crawl, index, or rank all your content for different locales. This is because the default IP addresses of the Googlebot crawler appear to be based in the USA. In addition, the crawler sends HTTP requests without setting Accept-Language in the request header."

        Regards,

        Peter

          International SEO Query

Hi All, I have an international SEO question and was wondering if you could help. My client runs a website in the UK (www.example.co.uk). The site is ranked well for it's collection of keywords, my client now wishes to target the US market. He wishes to use the same web structure and design in new site www.example.com as we know this converts well. My questions are: What would be the best practice for setting this up? I know there will be duplicate content issues if a website is duplicated. If we use the same design and website structure but re-word content, would this be acceptable? Thank you for all your help in advance.

          International Link Building Vendors

I'm working with a large enterprise site with many international domains. I have most of the markets covered but am having trouble identifying link building specialists/vendors in APAC - specifically Japan and Korea. Any recommendations from the community? Many thanks in advance!

          Multi-Country Duplicate Content

Hello, We have an ecommerce site that serves several countries on the same .com domain - US, UK and CA.  We have duplicate content across these countries because they are all English speaking so there is little variance in the pages and they each sell most of the same products.  We have implemented hreflang into our sitemaps but we need to address the duplicate content.  We were advised to canonicalize our UK and CA pages back to the duplicate US pages (our US pages account for the majority of our traffic and sales).  This would cause the UK and CA pages to fall out of the index but the visitor would still be taken to the correct country's page due to the hreflang. I'm leary about doing this because they are across countries.  Is this ok to do?  If not, how do we address the duplicate content since they are not on their own CCTLD's?

Impact of Japanese .jp site duplicate content?

Our main website is at  http://www.traxnyc.com and we just launched a Japanese version of the site at http://www.traxnyc.jp domain. However all the images used on the .jp site are linked from the .com site. Would this hurt me in Google at all for hotlinking images? Also there is quite a bit of duplicate content on the .jp site at the moment: only a few things have been translated to Japanese and for the most part the layouts and words are exactly the same (in English). Would this hurt my Google rankings in the US at all? Thanks for all your help.

Intentional redirect for international visitors to a website

We are doing PPC for a new client, and using Clicktale to improve conversion rates. However, Clicktale won't work because the client does not want international visitors looking at their website (competitive reasons! - yeah don't get me started...). They have a redirect on for all international visitors which points to a "coming soon..." page Are there any SEO implications on traffic in their own country (they currently do rank for terms)? I'd like to go back with a strong case for them removing any international redirect. Thank You

          Adding content in different languages

I have a site which offers free printable greeting cards in English. I have noticed that many people find the site from other countries with keywords in foreign languages. The bounce rate from these countries is high since presumably they leave when they realize that all cards are in English only. I was thinking of providing some greeting cards in different languages. I was thinking of offering each language in a subfolder which is only have the cards in that language but the content will either be in English or an automatic translation per IP. I do not plan to translate the content into different languages only the cards. What is the best way to do this?
