      Hi Guys,

      So here's the deal.

Let's say I have a site at mysite.com/ which talks about tomatoes, and I also have a subsection that talks about potatoes at mysite.com/potatoes

I want to stop providing information about potatoes altogether so i'm thinking about doing a 301 redirection from all of the pages at mysite.com/potatoes(.*) to the home page.

The thing is, mysite.com/potatoes actually has a great page authority (3475 links from 145 domains) so I really don't wan to lose all that juice...

      Here are my questions:

      • Will the links be added to the ones i have for the homepage already?
      • Since my home page and my /potatoes section ranked for 2 different subjects, how is this transfer going to affect my rankings for the homepage? will it now also rank for both tomatoes AND potatoes?
      • How much time does it usually take for google to recognize the 301 and pass the link juice?
      • Any other tips on optimizing this process?

      Thank you for your time!

      -francois

        Hi Francois,

I'm looking at older questions that are still unanswered, and wondering if you're still looking for advice, or if you took some action here. Really interested to hear what happened with this site!

Dude, are you sure that you want to dump these??...   You are almost the King of Potatoes 😉

If this was my site I would be hesitant about dumping these pages with tons of links.  I would do analytics to see how much traffic they are bringing and also using adsense channels (or other channeling) determine how much money they are making.  You might want to post once a month on this topic.  You can always keep these pages and use lots of nice thumbnail images of tomatoes to lure visitors over to your tomato pages. And reduce the number of links on your site that lead visitors to the potato pages. That big collection of tomato links will also pump some of the linkjuice over to your tomato pages.  Not as good as a redirect but still preserves the linkvalue that contributes to the authority of your domain.

Using your example, the problem is that the sites linking to your potato pages are clearly looking for pages about potatoes. If you stop offering information on that subject then everyone who clicks an existing link and finds themselves on your tomato page will be disappointed. You will suffer a high bounce rate which will send Google a signal something is wrong.

As users report back that the "potato" link is no longer valid or helpful, many of those sites will pull their links. Based on the numbers you are averaging about 25 links per site. Are many of these links from a footer that is site wide?

You are attempting to manipulate the system. Google is a multi-billion dollar company. It can't be too hard for them to figure out that a bunch of links for "potatoes" going to a page that doesn't use the word "potato" on it is an indicator that something is wrong.

If you have any related "potato" pages on your site, then redirecting users to that page is a win for everyone. If your site no longer has any helpful information, then a 404 page built for users interested in that topic would most helpful.

How much time does it usually take for google to recognize the 301 and pass the link juice?

It depends on your site's popularity and the traffic for the pages involved. Between a day and a month.

Canonical homepage link uses trailing slash while default homepage uses no trailing slash, will this be an issue?

Hello, 1st off, let me explain my client in this case uses BigCommerce, and I don't have access to the backend like most other situations. So I have to rely on BG to handle certain issues. I'm curious if there is much of a difference using domain.com/ as the canonical url while BG currently is redirecting our domain to domain.com. I've been using domain.com/ consistently for the last 6 months, and since we switches stores on Friday, this issue has popped up and has me a bit worried that we'll loose somehow via link juice or overall indexing since this could confuse crawlers. Now some say that the domain url is fine using / or not, as per - https://moz.com/community/q/trailing-slash-and-rel-canonical But I also wanted to see what you all felt about this. What says you?

Should I resubmit a 301 redirected domain in Webmaster Tools

We recently switched over a .com site to a new server. The .com site had a .co.uk domain redirecting to it previously, but when the switchover happened, the .co.uk was forgotten about. We have now realised what has happened, but not before taking a hit with our rankings. The .co.uk is still indexed in Google and now that we have sorted the redirects they are pointing to the right places. My question now; is there anything further I need to do? I know that the .co.uk will soon be removed from the SERPs, but I just want to make sure I haven't forgotten anything.

              301 redirects without .htaccess

I have a client that recently moved from an old ZenCart e-commerce site to Volusion.  The domain name did not change.  We need to redirect a bunch of the old URLs; however, Volusion's redirect tool does not work for URLS with "?" .  The old ZenCart structure is: http://www.mydomain.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=563 Volusion is a hosted platform and we do not have access to the .htaccess file. Any suggestions on a workaround? Thanks!Nancy <colgroup><col width="960"></colgroup>

              301 Redirect Best Practices

Hi SEOs, Question about ranking/redirects. If I have a particular page that is already ranking for a couple KWs in top SERPs, but know there are higher volume KWs I can optimize for should I just leave it as is or change the URL key and redirect for the time being until Google re-indexes. Example:
              current URL: www.example.com/action/best-movies
              new URL: www.example.com/action/best-action-movies
(the current would be ranking for "best action moves" whereas the new would include the actual "best action movies" KW) Let me know if I can clarify, thank you!

Can I do a redirect to a new domain name only a couple of weeks after having redirected to another domain?

I have a client with two website with very similar content.  Both had a lot of inbound links and performed fairly well in SERPS.  We recently combined both sites and have redirected one of the domains to the other.  The traffic dipped slightly initially, but is recovering nicely.  Now the client registered a new domain name he would like to use for the site.  Should I wait a few weeks for everything to settle down after the first redirect/consolidation of sites before doing a new redirect to a new domain name, or should I not worry about having any issues with doing it right away?

301 Redirect for homepage with language code

In my multilingual Magento store, I want to redirect the hompage URL with an added language code to the base URL. For example, I want to redirect http://www.mysite.com/tw/ to http://www.mysite.com/ which has the exact same content. Using a canonical URL will help with search engines, but I would just rather nip the problem in the butt by not showing http://www.mysite.com/tw/ to visitors in the first place. Problem is that I don't want (can't have) all /tw/ removed from URLs due to Magento limitations, so I just want to know how to redirect this single URL. Since rewrites are on, adding Redirect 301 /tw http://www.88kbbq.com would redirect all URLs with the /tw/ language code to ones without. Not an option. Hope folks can lend a hand here.

Will Google index a 301 redirect for a new site?

So here is the problem... We have setup a 301redirect for our clients website. When you search the clients name it comes up with the old .co.uk website. We have made this redirect to the new .com website. However on the SERPs when it shows the .co.uk it shows the old title pages which currently say 'Holding Page'. When you click on that link it takes you to the fully functioning .com website. My question is, will the title tags in the SERPs which show the .co.uk update to the new ones from the .com? I'm thinking it will be just a case of Google catching up on things and it will sort itself out eventually. If anyone could help I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks Chris
