Disavowing Links for Subcategory of Site

Has anyone tried using Google's Disavow tool with only a specific subcategory of their site?
We're an ecommerce company and our site took a small hit with this recent Penguin update. We're certain previous linkbuilding efforts are the cause. But we'd like to try the Disavow tool with 1 subcategory to start, see if our rankings for that category improve (we used to be top 3, now ~12 or 13), and if so then roll it out through the rest of the site.
Looking for input from others on if they have any experience with this or if it'd be better to just go for the whole thing at once. Thanks.

It won't hurt to disavow positively known spammy back links and your rankings drops may in fact be due to penguin, but don't yet be 100% sure you were the one hit with the penalty--like I said the way it looks know, it appears more like one/some upstream link(s) got whacked and you're feeling the effects of less link juice. Time will tell. In the mean time, focus on creating content that your audience can use and share and work your social media channels.

Virtually all our big keywords/category names took hits in rankings on the day of and day after this recent Penguin update so that makes it seem like it's Penguin. On average they lost about 5 positions, but some lost as few as 1 and some lost 15+. But it clearly affected our whole site. Our idea was to test out removing the links on one subcategory and if it worked to do it for the rest of the site.
The guy they had building links for years did all the typical stuff - directories, spam sites, reciprocal linking, links with non-relevant sites, etc. We sell outdoor products and I've found backlinks on penis enlargement sites, anchor text for products we've never sold, etc. The backlink profile is very, very bad. Even if Penguin wasn't the culprit, these backlinks have to be hurting our rankings.

For what reasons are you certain it's penguin? You don't typically hear of penguin penalties being assessed in a small way on a individual parts of a site or of the penalty being removed because links were cleaned up to only a portion of a site. I tend to think of penguin as more of an all-or-nothing type of penalty that takes the site all the way down to the bottom of the search results. Remember, sites that are linking to you and that were passing link juice could have been penalized and in tern you lost only that much link juice to your site--making it appear that you've been penalized.
In any case, if it is penguin, I don't think you'd be able to clean it up and see results a category at a time. Of those I've heard about getting out of the penalty, they've had to clean up all their links and work diligently on content to escape.

Links on page
Hi I have a web page which lists about 50-60 products which links out to either a pdf on the product or the main manufacturers website page containing product detail. The site in non e-commerce is this the site/page likely to get hit by Penguin? Would it be best to create a separate page for the product/manufacturer group i.e 5 or 6 pages but linking out to the PDFs etc...?

Development site is live (and has indexed) alongside live site - what's the best course of action?
Hello Mozzers, I am undertaking a site audit and have just noticed that the developer has left the development site up and it has indexed. They 301d from pages on old site to equivalent pages on new site but seem to have allowed the development site to index, and they haven't switched off the development site. So would the best option be to redirect the development site pages to the homepage of the new site (there is no PR on dev site and there are no links incoming to dev site, so nothing much to lose...)? Or should I request equivalent to equivalent page redirection? Alternatively I can simply ask for the dev site to be switched off and the URLs removed via WMT, I guess... Thanks in advance for your help! 🙂

10,000+ links from one site per URL--is this hurting us?
We manage content for a partner site, and since much of their content is similar to ours, we canonicalized their content to ours. As a result, some URLs have anything from 1,000,000 inbound links / URL to 10,000+ links / URL --all from the same domain. We've noticed a 10% decline in traffic since this showed up in our webmasters account & were wondering if we should nofollow these links?

Transfer link juice from old to new site
Hi seomozzers, The design team is building a new website for one of our clients. My role is to make sure all the link juice is kept. My first question is, should I just make 301s or is there another technique to preserve all the link juice from the old to new site that I should be focusing on? Second Question is that ok to transfer link juice using dev urls like www.dev2.example.com (new site) or 182.3456.2333? or should I wait the creation of real urls to do link juice transfer? Too many links?
I've recently taken over a site from another agency, which has hundreds of linking root domains. These domains are of very low quality and, in my opinion, are being ignored by Google. Is it best to 'clean up' some of these links, or leave them and start building quality links? I just don't want to waste time cleaning link profiles if there's no need.

The missing link?

I constantly am Re-writing articles, reading SEOMoz on tips and tricks how to make link juice flow. Yet only one of my keywords ranks decently, the rest never show up. On-Site Optimization Tips for Job site?
I am working on a job site that only ranks well for the homepage with very low ranking internal pages. My job pages do not rank what so ever and are database driven and often times turn to 404 pages after the job has been filled. The job pages have to no content either. Anybody have any technical on-site recommendations for a job site I am working on especially regarding my internal pages? (Cross Country Allied.com) Any help would be much appreciated.
