      Hello Everyone,

So our site has used ‘http’ for the domain since the start. Everything has been set up for this structure and Google is only indexing these pages. Just recently a second version was created on ‘httpS’. We know having both up is the worst case scenario but now that both are up is it worth just switching over or would the original domain authority warrant just keeping it on ‘http’ and redirecting the ‘httpS’ version?

Assuming speed and other elements wouldn’t be an issue and it's done correctly.

Our thought was if we could do this quickly it would be easier to just redirect the ‘httpS’ version but was not sure if the Pros of ‘httpS’ would be worth the resources.

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Please let us know if there are any further details we could provide that might help.

Looking forward to hearing from all of you!

Thank you in advance for the help.

      Best,

Yes I would recommend moving to https over  the curent http it will be very unlikely that you have an issue with google and  The end-users will feel much more secure.

If you are doing this on a bespoke site ( not very common CMS or made by hand)

I know tools like  letsencrypt.com give you a free certificate so will CloudFlare.com  so if you're trying to have HTTP/2 , HSTS, forced https & a cert you can use for free version and it will do everything you need for https cost  (free-$5,000) (any reverse proxy CDN or WAF) stackpath.com ($20)  incapsula.com ($59) sucuri.net WAF ($19) Armor.com ($600-7,000) WAF only (under $200) Speedyrails.com has always had deals on cloudflare (35-40% off) if you're going to use it.

if you use a EV cert or just want to have a regular certificate I strongly recommend looking at third-party sites you can save a lot of money.

I like  DigiCert and GlobalSign  personal most of the others are on the Symantec what was VERISIGN you can definitely get away with getting one for $5-100 on namecheap  but remember to search for the best price on Google.

They tend to make the job a lot easier and  my personal opinion is that every person should actually do have WAF for their sites they like.

Thank you both for the help, this is great. We were asking more in relation to choosing between which version to make the priority. It seems like you would recommend switching over to ‘https’ even though all of our pages being indexed are ‘http’? - Just wanted to make sure we understood you correctly.

We will make sure to go through all of the documentation you sent over before moving as well.

Please let us know if there is anything we could provide further details for that might help.

As Romans stated you will need to go into search console and add all four properties. Then pick which one you want to be your canonical or  Chosen URL.

                  1. On the Search Console Home page, click the site you want.

                  2. Click the gear icon, and then click Site Settings.

                  3. In the Preferred domain section, select the option you want.

                  4. HTTP://

There is no a big deal, to avoid duplicate content just make the appropriate redirects, and register both properties on search console the 'http' and 'https' version and then set the right version on this case https.

Go to Search Console > Add a property > https version > Verify
then go Site settings and set the new version of your website, with those simple steps you will have everything up and running.

Http > https Switch Before Platform Migration?

We are planning a series of large site migrations over the next 12-18 months, moving from one platform to another. It's likely the first will be completed by around Aug this year, with the process running until the back end of 2018. The sites are currently on http, and the plan is to first of all migrate all sites to https in the next couple of months. The concern is that, due to the http>https 301 redirects that will be in place, are we putting ourselves at unnecessary risk by effectively carrying out 2 migrations in the space of a year (in terms of loss of potential authority caused by redirects)? Would we be better to wait, and implement https at point of platform migration instead? Thoughts appreciated.

NGinx rule for redirecting trailing '/'

We have successfully implemented run-of-the-mill 301s from old URLs to new (there were about 3,000 products). As normal. Like we do on every other site etc. However, recently search console has started to report a number of 404s with the page names with a trailing forward slash at the end of the .html suffix. So, /old-url.html is redirecting (301) to /new-url.html However, now for some reason /old-url.html/ has 'popped up' in the Search Console crawl report as a 404. Is there a 'blobal' rule you can write in nGinx to say redirect *.html/ to */html (without the forward slash) rather than manually doing them all?

Has anybody ever seen (or written) a case study on increasing domain authority?

I am an in-house digital marketer for a small business in the UK. The majority of our business comes from people finding us on Google's organic SERPs for relevant search terms. Our website has been around since 1999 and we have established a great base of keyword rankings in that time from key vanity keywords in our field that generate a tonne of long tail rankings for the product pages on our site. Last year, I was given the target of increasing our websites DA from 40(something) to 60+ by the end of the year. I put a plan together at the start of the year which included things like 'create awesome content', 'promote awesome content', do 'proper' link building, do 'real' PR, make sure technical SEO is all up to scratch, increase CTR, reduce bounce rate etc etc But... I wanted to find some examples of case studies where SEO's had taken a site with a starting DA of 'whatever' and increased it to 'a way higher whatever'. I found a tonne of 'How to increase your domain authority' type blog posts which said things like 'create awesome content', 'promote awesome content', 'do proper link building' etc etc but no hard data case studies from people who had been successful in doing it! I really just wanted to make sure that the plan I was putting together, was focused on the right things! Does anybody know of any case studies? I'm still keen to check them out. Being a small business, it's often the case that once we've put a plan together, we quickly realize that we don't have the resources, time, personnel or budget to follow it through but at lest having the plan confirmed by successful case studies doing the same thing or similar would really encouraging! Thanks,
                      Rich

                      Duplicate content in external domains

                      Hi,
I have been asking about this case before, but now my question is different.
We have a new school that offers courses and programs . Its website is quite new (just a five months old) It is very common between these schools to publish the courses and programs in training portals to promote those courses and to increase the visibility of them. As the website is really new, I found when I was doing the technical audit, that when I googled a text snipped from the site, the new school website was being omitted, and instead, the course portals are being shown. Of course, I know that the best recommendation would be to create a different content for that purpose, but I would like to explore if there is more options. Most of those portals doesn't allow to place a link to the website in the content and not to mention canonical. Of course most of them are older than the new website and their authority is higher. so,... with this situation, I think the only solution is to create a different content for the website and for the portals.
I was thinking that maybe, If we create the content first in the new website, send it to the index, and wait for google to index it, and then send the content to the portals, maybe we would have more opportunites to not be ommited by Google in search results. What do you think? Thank you!

                      Dynamic 301's causing duplicate content

Hi, wonder if anyone can help? We have just changed our site which was hosted on IIS and the page url's were like this ( example.co.uk/Default.aspx?pagename=About-Us ). The new page url is example.co.uk/About-Us/ and is using Apache. The 301's our developer told us to use was in this format: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/Default.aspx$
                      RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^pagename=About-Us$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$  http://www.domain.co.uk/About-Us/ [R=301,L] This seemed to work from a 301 point of view; however it also seemed to allow both of the below URL's to give the same page! example.co.uk/About-Us/?pagename=About-Us example.co.uk/About-Us/ Webmaster Tools has now picked up on this and is seeing it a duplicate content. Can anyone help why it would be doing this please. I'm not totally clued up and our host/ developer cant understand it too. Many Thanks

Domain Age. What's a good age?

I have a new site that ranks very well and is rich with content. I know that it would rank better but since it's new I'm assuming that it is being held back. My question is how long does it take for a site to mature?
